Christian Church of God, Grand Junction, Colorado    Statement #9 page four

Purpose of Baptism in Summary:

It is an expression of our commitment:

  • Now, (since Jesus died for us) we can end our lives of satisfying the flesh, through baptism.
  • Now we are able to leave behind what we have become in the flesh.
  • All that sin we committed growing up into maturity and all that sin we did as mature adults can be buried in the baptismal water.
  • Afterward, we begin our newness of life. A lifetime of conversion from living by the flesh to living by the Spirit of God in us by the laying on of hands. God‘s Spirit will help lead us to overcome sin.
  • It establishes a covenant between God and each believer: When we believe and keep His commandments, God promises eternal life to those who overcome. [5]

Baptism is a new beginning for each of us. Our participation shows our faith in the Word of God, that we trust Him to raise us up at that future Day when we will receive eternal spirit life. There is much more to understand about that future eternal life. (see Statement #10) Paul wrote to the Philippians in chapter 3:14-15:

“I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Therefore let us, as many as are mature, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you.”

The tree of life stands offering its fruit in the paradise of God. [6] If you are desiring to obey God, keeping His commandments and willing to give up everything sinful in this world, what are you waiting for?      It's your move!
